Richard Basehart (1914-1984) was perhaps best-known for his role as Admiral Harriman Nelson in the TV sci-fi drama ‘Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea’ (1964–68), hilariously parodied by Dick DeBartolo and Mort Drucker as ‘Voyage to See What’s on the Bottom’ (MAD #101, 1966); and later reprised by the same pair in ‘The Spy who Loved (Glubbed) Me’ (#199, June 1978). MAD had begun the maritime theme with Basehart’s appearance as Ishmael in ‘Moby (Morbid) Dick’ (Feldstein/Wood, #30 1956; and Jacobs/Rickard, #100 1966).
