No male performer has won more Emmy Awards than Ed Asner, and five of those seven trophies have come courtesy of his role as Lou Grant, originally in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and later in the dramatic series bearing the character's name. Artist Angelo Torres and writer Tom Koch presented "The Mary Tailor-Made Show" in MAD #155 (December '72) and later teamed up for the spoof excerpted here, "Lou Grouch," which landed in MAD #205 (March '79).

Somehow, it seemed like Mary Tyler Moore herself was the only member of her sitcom's cast that didn't land a follow-up hit. Artist Sam Viviano caricatured Moore, Ed Asner, Gavin MacLeod and Betty White to accompany Frank Jacobs' reworking of Moore's classic sitcom opening in "TV Theme Songs." The four-theme article ran in MAD's "Hot TV Issue" (#266, October '86), which made its bow just a few months after CBS cancelled Moore's latest attempt at a sitcom comeback, Mary.
