Steve Lopes was an artist working for the newspapers and was asked to do a couple of staires for the Australian MAD magazine. The first one he did was a movie called Green Card staring Gerard Depardieu.

He went to New York in 1990, working as an artist and met Dorothy Crouch who worked at MAD Magazine and she introduced Steve Lopes to all the MAD staffers such as Dick DeBartolo, Mort Drucker and Bill Gaines. They recommend him to be the first official Australian editor and to increase the Australian content on his return to Australia. Steve became editor at the age of 20 and commissioned around 40% Aussie material and edit the US material, which didn't translate so well. Steve restructed the magazine, introduced new writers and artists and the magazine went well. Steve used to go to NY regularly to work with the staff and then to DC comics, who brought the magazine.

The staff under Steve Lopes were quite successful and even brought out Sergio Aragones to Australia for a tour. They used to sell around 80000 copies of the magazine per issue back then. Steve did that for 6 or 7 years before moving to the UK to become a fine artist.
