History of the Argentinian MAD Magazine
The Argentinian MAD was published during the military dictatorship. The Catholic Church had a very good relationship with the dictatorial government. When issue #7 was published, it included the strip “Altar Ego”. The church believed that it was a joke about a particular church (the cathedral of San Isidro), and MAD director Daniel Ripoll was kidnapped and tortured for a week. He was finally released, and some claim that William Gaines sent his lawyers to intercede, since it was starting to be an international scandal.
