Sylvester's character was changed slightly in the 1990's. Note that he's not just a janitor anymore, but he's become a cool kid. Alfred E. Neuman went through a similar metamorphosis. Trying to appeal to younger audiences by turning the mascot into a hip youngster. 1990's pop culture was all about trying really hard to be young and cool.
