Leslie Alfred Joseph Lilley was a comics and newspaper strip scriptwriter, for Jane in the Daily Mirror; entire annuals for Odhams (Wham! and Smash!); and very many more. During WWII, he had amused fellow-sailors with amusing sketches before providing ‘pocket cartoons’ to weekly papers like Reveille and Weekend, then took to scriptwriting, pairing up with stylish artist Chic Jacob on many collaborations. For TV, the pair went on to write gags and stunts for The Golden Shot, and to script ‘Vision On’ for deaf viewers. Lilley helped found and chair the Cartoonists' Club of Great Britain; became President of the Federation of European Cartoonists' Organisations; was instrumental in the creation of the Society for Strip Illustration and was a permanent jury member for the World Cartoon Festival.
